Frequently Asked Questions

What benefits will they bring my school?

Some members of the GSSP have been enjoying the benefits of teaching assistant apprentices for over a year now. These are some of the benefits they have enjoyed:

  • Apprentices have planned and lead intra-school sports competitions across a range of year groups.
  • Apprentices have helped deliver breakfast / after-school sport and exercise clubs that have enriched the PE curriculum offer.
  • Apprentices have helped increase confidence, knowledge and skills of staff in teaching PE and sport.
  • Apprentices have helped support daily exercise programmes outside of PE, such as ‘The Daily Mile’.
  • Apprentices have assisted with the planning and delivery of PE lessons within classes that require an extra focus on developing physical literacy.

Are they vetted before they arrive?

All apprentices are DBS check and undergo training and assessments before they are sent out to schools to work with pupils. They complete safeguarding training during their day of induction, and a sports-related coaching qualification within the first few weeks of their placement.

Will there be a cost to my school?

Funding for training will be accessed through your school's apprenticeship levy. There will be no additional cost to your school for training - the only cost applicable to your school will be the salary paid to the apprentice, which is approximately £700 per month.

How much Supervision will they require?

While at your school apprentices will operate as normal members of staff. They will work diligently and hold any responsibility bestowed to them.

Please note: apprentices are to assist with the delivery of curriculum PE, under the supervision of class teachers.
